We live a technological driven world and it is hard to decide whether that is something you should be utterly happy or sad about! There was a time where people were attached to their families and pets – these days’ cell phones have replaced most of the precious entities in our lives. Whilst it is all good, have you ever given thought that there are actual radiations that are emitting from the mobile phone device? So can these phone radiations cause you any damage?
Radiations That Cell Phones Emit
Let’s begin by talking about the radiations that cell phones emit these days. These radiations that are electromagnetic in nature are known as radio frequency radiations (RFR).
Are These Radiations Harmful?
Moving to the nature of these radiations that our cell phone devices emit – for decades it has been claimed that these radiations are very harmless and powerless owing to its lower ionizing capacity. Hence people for a long time have believed that these radiations are near to being nothing – powerless – because of the less ionization. If the safety of these radiations were to be judged on this basis, it is pretty obvious that they are 100% safe for human use.
World Health Organization (WHO) Classification
It was not until very recently that it was pointed out by the World Health Organization (WHO) that radiations are harmful and have the power to penetrate inside the human body causing undefined health damage. WHO made these classifications in 2011 stating that the radiations emitted by our cell phones in fact ae carcinogenic in nature! The radiation falls under the 2B carcinogen category and have been termed as ‘possible’ causing agents of cancer. The fact that should be noted here is that these radiations are only ‘believed’ to be predictors of cancer – there is no evidence yet that solidifies this fact.
What Are The Risks?
Since there is lack of evidence, scientists urge you to take precautionary measures but not ‘believe’ radiations to be cancer causing. The general public on the other hand has led to firmly believe that radiations do in fact cause cancer. In order to take a clearer stance on this debate, it is better to talk about the health risks that radiations can impose.
Phone Radiations Linked To Brain Cancer
Several studies have been published that link phone radiations to various illnesses – most likely brain cancer. The chances of phone rays causing cancer are as high as 40 to 44 percent. Interestingly, there are two different types of brain tumors that phone radiations are likely to cause.
- Gliomas
This is a lethal type of tumor that develops at the root stem of the brain or right in the spine. The chances of survival with tumor are bleak with most people dying. It is a malignant cancer and not very common – only reported once every 3 years.
- Acoustic Neuromas
This is the non-malignant type of tumor that is not deadly and does not spread in the body. Survival rate is better for this tumor. It develops right inside the skull.
